The head of the Department of Emergency Situations (DSU), Raed Arafat, recommends that in the event of a nuclear attack, the population should not panic, stay in their homes with closed windows and listen to the recommendations that come through official channels. Arafat says the government will organize training on civil defense and proper emergency preparedness.
“We are working and will definitely come out with other exercises that have an integrated aspect, not only of civil protection, not only from the information and evacuation side, but also from the emergency medical aid, which worries us very much. about adequate training at the level of emergency services that are on the front lines, on the front lines, when something like this happens,” Raed Arafat said Thursday evening on Digi 24, according to News.ro.
When asked what the response should be in the event of a nuclear threat, the doctor said that “perhaps the most important thing is what can’t be done.”
“First of all, don’t panic, it’s for sure! Second: if you are told: stay at home for the next five to six hours, do not go outside and stay at home with closed windows. The third – if they tell you: don’t drive your own car, stay at home, do it! The risk of panic means that some people may leave an area that they think is not normal and wake up to another shock about traffic and congestion for no reason. Therefore, in such situations, it is important to listen to what cannot be done and what recommendations to make. (…) But everything is based on the information that comes officially,” said Raed Arafat.
He drew attention to the fact that “methods of manipulation” appear in emergency situations, which try to cause panic among the population.
“The prayer is that the population, whatever the situation is, whether it’s an earthquake or something else, listens and respects the instructions given, because the moment they stop respecting and we listen to all kinds of misinformation, then the risk is that there will be chaos and we will no longer be able to do our job properly,” Raed Arafat added.
The head of the DSU clarified that civil defense exercises have already been conducted, this year such public training is taking place in the field of CBRN – chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear.
