Tom Odell’s 2013 song “Another Love” is now at number 17 on the official UK charts after steadily gaining popularity on TikTok.
The song began to gain popularity when a sample of it was repeatedly used to accompany a series of protest videos.
The snippet of the song used is a short clip filmed at the English singer-songwriter’s concert, in which the crowd is heard singing the words, “And if someone hurts you, I want to fight / But my arms are broken too.” many times / That’s why I’ll use my voice, I’ll be so *** rude / Words always win, but I know I’ll lose.”
In recent days, women in Iran have used the clip as the soundtrack to their protest videos in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahshi Amini, who was arrested for indecent dressing for not wearing the hijab (headscarf) properly.
The 22-year-old died in custody, police deny abuse and say she died of a heart attack, but her family disputes this.
There are daily demonstrations in Iran in which at least 41 people have died.
Commenting on the video of the protests, Tom Odell said: “I am shocked by the events taking place in Iran. I send my love and thoughts to these incredibly brave people who stand up for human rights and protect women.”
“Everyone should have a choice of what to wear and what not to wear,” he added.

The singer also dedicated “Another Love” to the protesters during his concert in Germany: “Tonight I want to dedicate it to the brave people protesting in Iran.”
“Another Love” became background music mostly in videos of Iranian women cutting their hair in solidarity with Amini.
