Iran-Northern Iraq: Tension in the “Reds” against the backdrop of the death of Amini

Artillery of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired today at military bases of anti-Iranian organizations in Iraqi Kurdistan in northern Iraq, Iranian state television reported.

In particular, according to the announcement, the target was the “headquarters of anti-Iranian terrorists” based in northern Iraq, TV reported, citing Kurdish guerrilla organizations.

Tehran blames armed dissident Kurdish groups for recent unrest inside Iran’s borders, especially in the northwest, where the vast majority of ten million Iranian Kurds live.

Dozens of Iraqi and Iranian Kurds demonstrated this morning in the city of Erbil, the capital of northern Iraq, over the death of Mahshi Amini, a Kurdish-born woman who collapsed and died after being arrested by the vice police in Tehran.

Demonstrators with placards bearing Amini’s photo gathered outside the United Nations office in Erbil chanting “Death to the Dictator”, a slogan referring to Iran’s supreme religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“Women, life, freedom,” chanted others, many of whom were Iranian Kurds living in self-imposed exile in semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan.

Amini was arrested by Iranian authorities for not following a strict dress code.

“They killed (Amini) because a lock of hair was sticking out from under her hijab. The youth are asking for freedom. They demand rights for everyone because everyone has the right to dignity and freedom,” said Namam Ismaili, an Iranian Kurd from Sardast, a city in northwestern Iran.

“We are not against religion, we are not against Islam, we want religion to be separated from politics,” said Maysun Majidi, an Iranian-born Kurdish actor and director based in Erbil.
