Germany wants to prevent citizens of the European Union from occupying key positions in Russian state-owned enterprises, according to the proposal for new EU sanctions against Russia, which was seen by the daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, writes the DPA agency, citing Agerpres.
For many years, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was a board member of Russian energy giant Rosneft. He finally announced in May that he would leave the board of directors after coming under increased pressure following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to the German daily, Berlin also insists on the introduction of a global price ceiling on oil imports from Russia, as already proposed by the G7 group, as well as a ban on cooperation with Russian companies in the field of nuclear energy.
Germany’s proposal also includes a ban on the sale of real estate in the European Union to citizens of Russia. More people are subject to EU entry bans and asset freezes.
EU member states have agreed to introduce new sanctions against Moscow following last week’s announcement of partial mobilization in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Over the weekend, the European Commission held talks with representatives of 27 EU member states to assess their priorities.
The EU executive is currently working on a concrete proposal for sanctions, which member states will discuss on Wednesday. Union sanctions require unanimous consent.
As for the proposal for key positions in Russian state-owned companies, the German paper claims that Moscow has long sought to exercise political influence in European capitals through these lucrative appointments, and calls for an end to this “strategic corruption.”
The ban should not apply to European subsidiaries of Russian state-owned enterprises, writes a German newspaper quoted by the DPA agency.
