British Prime Minister Liz Truss has told her Israeli counterpart that she is considering moving the British embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed holy city of Jerusalem, Politico and Agerpres reported Thursday.
The British prime minister raised the question of the possible move during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Wednesday at the UN summit in New York, following the move by former US President Donald Trump.
The UK has long maintained an embassy in Tel Aviv, despite Israel’s recognition of Jerusalem as its capital.
Trump, when he was president, caused controversy by moving the US embassy to Jerusalem in 2017, but his successor, Democrat Joe Biden, decided to leave the decision to move the US embassy.
During a 2020 campaign rally, Donald Trump said he made the decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem for evangelicals, a community that strongly supported him in the presidential election.
A Downing Street spokeswoman said Truss had informed Lapid of her “review of the current location of the British Embassy in Israel”.
When she was foreign secretary, she promised it during the Conservative leadership race in a letter to conservative friends of Israel. Truss said he understood the “importance and sensitivity” of the site.
