The Big Sick (2017, 98%)
A nuanced, culture-clash romantic comedy that recreates the real-life relationship between actor Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, who also wrote the screenplay. Nanjiani plays herself and Emily plays Zoe Kazan.
The budding love is first threatened by a possible arranged marriage between Kumail and the woman chosen by his parents, and then by Emily’s serious illness. Kumail wants her back, but first he must overcome a feud with her parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter). The ending is easy to predict, but it’s worth seeing how it gets there.
Sylvie’s Love (2020, 93%)
This quality melodrama seems to have been brought back from the golden age of cinema, but times have changed, and in place of Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman came two black actors.

But their paths diverge when Sylvie pursues a career in television. Later, when they meet again, they find that their feelings are intact.
