
Among those released by the Russians during the latest prisoner exchange is British citizen Aiden Aslin, who was sentenced to death by a court in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic in June and accused of being a mercenary for Ukraine.
On June 9, Britons Aiden Aslin and Sean Pinner, along with Moroccan citizen Brahim Saadoun, were sentenced to death after a DPR court found them guilty of “hiring” for the benefit of Ukraine, Russian state media reported at the time, as cited by CNN.
According to RIA, three foreigners were detained in Mariupol in mid-April, when they were “training to carry out terrorist activities.”
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg (France) called on the Russian Federation to ensure non-execution of the death penalty.
Ten prisoners of war from several countries, including the US and Great Britain, have been transferred from Russia to Saudi Arabia as part of an exchange between Moscow and Ukraine, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, as quoted by AFP.
The prisoners, also from Sweden, Morocco and Croatia, arrived in Saudi Arabia from Russia, and Saudi authorities are “facilitating procedures for their safe return to their respective countries,” according to a ministry statement.
British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Wednesday welcomed the “extremely welcome” announcement of the release of five Britons held by Russia.
“Extremely good news: five British nationals held by pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine have been safely repatriated,” Liz Truss wrote on Twitter, thanking the Ukrainian president and Saudi Arabia, which facilitated the release as part of an exchange between Moscow and Ukraine.
Among those released are two American veterans who were held by Russian forces for months, family members confirmed to CNN.
Also released were Americans Alexander John-Robert Druke, 39, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Andy Thai Ngoc Nguyen, 27, of Hartselle, Alabama. They were captured during the fighting for Ukraine north of Kharkiv in June.
