USA: Hollywood’s iconic sign gets a new look

In 2023, Hollywood will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its most popular landmark, the signage in the Los Angeles, California area, with a more modern look.

The huge white letters on the hill have been cleaned and painted, a process estimated to take the next eight weeks. It will take 45 gallons of paint and primer to paint the letters. In fact, anyone can watch the painting process via the Internet and a sign camera that works around the clock.

The sign is a frequent object of creative interventions. It has been vandalized from time to time, most recently an artistic signage from “Hollywood” to “Hollywood” was added.

The last time the sign was repainted ten years ago, for the 90th anniversary. Ohio-based Sherwin-Williams is once again partnering with the Hollywood Sign Trust on this project.

First laid out in 1923, it was originally called “Hollywoodland,” referring not to the film industry but to the driving force behind Southern California’s economy: expensive real estate development. The man who created the huge publicity for the Hollywoodland development, Harry Chandler, was also the owner of the Los Angeles Times.

The sign, originally intended to decorate the hill for just 18 months, has been almost a century since it was first installed there. However, it had to be demolished and rebuilt in 1978 when the original letters collapsed. Then the name of the sign became shorter, now residents and visitors of the city saw the word “Hollywood”.

“The sign is the pride of Los Angeles and we’re thrilled that fans around the world will be able to witness the transformation for a very special 100th anniversary,” Hollywood Sign Trust CEO Jeff Zarinam said in a statement. .
