Roger Federer will retire after the Laver Cup in 2022 and ahead of the event in London, he spoke about how difficult it was to make the decision, the happiest moments of his career and what lies ahead for him and tennis in general. (new generation).
Roger Federer, an emotional press conference before the last match of his career
Roger wanted to end the “party” in the presence of his great rivals, so Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are with him.
Due to physical problems, Federer will only have to play one doubles match at the O2 Arena.
The Swiss said that he will continue to play, but only in exhibition matches.
Withdrawal decision: “The situation with my knee did not progress, and I had to make a decision to end my career. I never wanted to go under the knife, but I had to do it a few times. I had a lot of time to make a decision because I haven’t played in over a year. I was sad when I realized it was the end. I made that decision this summer after Wimbledon. Of course I wanted to keep playing, but I couldn’t.”
Acceptance of withdrawal: “It was not easy to answer all the questions about the resignation without feeling anxious. I wanted people to be happy when I said goodbye, not to tell me they were sorry all the time.”
The best moments of his career: “When I beat (Pete) Sampras at Wimbledon, back in 2017 when I beat (Rafael) Nadal in the Australian Open final. I didn’t think too much about it either.”
The last match in his career: “I put on my sneakers, I put on a shirt, I think about the game. It’s beautiful and intense. It is clear that the most beautiful thing would be to play here with Nadal in doubles, because he was my great rival.
Carlos Alcaraz’s words about his legacy: “I’m sorry I didn’t play with him. What he did at the US Open was fantastic. He’s going to be one of the stars of tennis, I’ve always said that. It was nice to hear his words, we met once at Wimbledon.”
What will he do in the next period: “I want to watch some of my matches and read everything that has been written about me, which I haven’t read yet. I will spend more time with my family, after the Laver Cup we will go on vacation.”
London’s O2 Arena: “I’m glad that the Laver Cup is played in London because the US Open was ruled out when we saw that Serena was going to end her career there. This city is one of the most special in my career because of Wimbledon. People supported me from day one.”
The future in tennis: “I don’t want to think now about what kind of relationship I will have with tennis. I just want to know that the fans will continue to follow me.”
Spirit of Victory: “People have talked about me, my hitting talent, but I also pride myself on improving my character on the field and my fighting spirit on the field. Maybe I should have been more professional at the beginning of my career.”
New generation: “Tennis will become more athletic and better than ever. Zverev, Tsitsipas, Alcaraz? The serve and forehand don’t matter as much anymore, players stay in the bottom lane after the serve.”
GOAT tennis: “I am proud of what I have achieved. After winning my 15th Grand Slam at Wimbledon, the rest was a bonus. Sampras’ presence in the stands was special. I am happy that I managed to win 20 Grand Slam tournaments and more than 100 titles.”
