YouTube has announced that those who create short videos on YouTube – so-called Shorts – will be able to earn from advertising if they meet certain conditions. Short videos can last a maximum of 60 seconds, have been available since 2021 and are becoming increasingly popular. TikTok is a company that has shown how much can be done with these short videos and how many people are interested in it.

YouTube says those who create short clips will be able to benefit from a portion of the ad revenue YouTube receives from ads that appear between clips in the Shorts stream. The company will create a fund and provide 45% of advertising revenue to creators.

This is a way YouTube hopes to better reward content creators, and only those who meet the criteria of having at least 1,000 followers and over 10 million views in the last 3 months will have access to this revenue on Shorts. The new source of income will be available to developers from the beginning of 2023.

The content creator economy has grown tremendously in recent years. SignalFire estimates that in 2020, more than 50 million people earn income from the content they create on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Twitch. Linktree estimates that by 2022, there will be 200 million people making money from content created online.
