Roger Federer has undergone three knee surgeries in recent years, and his hopes of returning to the tennis court have been dashed. The Swiss Grand Champion has announced his retirement from the white sport at this weekend’s Laver Cup.

With physical problems, Federer will have to play only one doubles match at the O2 Arena (London).
Roger flew into London on Monday and trained at the O2 Arena on Tuesday. In the famous hall, Mr. Perfect won the Tournament of Champions twice (2010 and 2011).
In a press conference with Swiss journalists, Roger stated that he would not play any singles matches and that the elimination match would actually consist of a doubles duel.
“I won’t be able to play in individual matches, that was pretty clear. Therefore, it was not possible to participate in the October tournament in Basel.
I’ll probably play a doubles game here on Friday night and that’s it. I asked our captain Bjorn Borg if I could do it and he said I can do whatever I want,” he said Roger Federer.
One doubles option would be to play Rafael Nadal, as happened in the 2017 Laver Cup draw.

At the Laver Cup 2022 (September 23-25), Roger Federer will join forces with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Team Europe will compete at the O2 Arena in London against Team Rest of the World: Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Diego Schwartzman, Alex de Minaur, John Isner and Jack Sock.
Laver Cup, through time: Europe wins every time
Laver Cup 2017 – held at the O2 Arena in Prague, Europe won 15-9.
2018 Laver Cup – Held at the United Center in Chicago, Europe won 13-8.
Laver Cup 2019 – held at Palexpo in Geneva and Europe won 13-11.
Laver Cup 2020 – Not contested due to the Covid-19 pandemic (Roland Garros was held at the same time and the Laver Cup was eventually cancelled).
Laver Cup 2021 – held at TD Garden in Boston and Europe won 14-1.
What is the Laver Cup format?
Both teams have six players. A win earns a point on the first day of racing. There will be three singles and one doubles match.
On the second day of matches, a win brings two points. There will also be three singles and one doubles match.
On the third game day, success will be awarded with three points. After the doubles match, there will be up to three singles matches (depending on the score in the table).
The first team to score 13 points will be declared the winner (total of 24 points at stake).
No player may play more than two singles matches during the three days of competition. Also, four out of six athletes must perform in doubles.
