“It was not the easiest night and not the easiest morning. “Thousands of people have crossed the border in the last day,” said Vyacheslav Gladkov in a video message published on his Telegram channel.

Earlier this month, the Ukrainian military first announced a counteroffensive in the south, and later this week made an unexpected and lightning-fast breakthrough to Russian lines in the northeast, in the Kharkiv region.

As of Saturday, the Kyiv regime reported significant territorial gains against the Russian military in the east, where it said it was withdrawing troops from some areas to “fortify” the separatist Donetsk region further south.

Most of the people who crossed the border in the Belgorod region went to visit their relatives in Russia, Gladkov said.

“Now, 1,342 people are staying in 27 temporary accommodation centers set up in the region,” he said.

“In general, the situation is under control,” Gladkov said, assuring that on Sunday afternoon, unlike the previous night, there were no longer long queues at the border.
