A coffin with the inscription “RIP British Empire” (“Rest in Peace British Empire”) was thrown into the river that crosses the center of the Irish capital Dublin on Monday, reports Agerpres with reference to PA Media/dpa.
The incident occurred during a protest march against the monarchy organized in the Irish capital on the day of the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II in London.
Anti-Imperialist Action Ireland said the gesture was a recreation of former socialist leader James Connolly’s action in Dublin in 1897 during Queen Victoria’s visit to the city.
Irish President Michael Higgins and the country’s Prime Minister Michael Martin were among the world leaders who attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
Monday’s march in Dublin was held as a gesture of protest “against the slavish worship of the English monarchy by the ruling class of the Free State.”
Protesters also opposed the lowering of the Irish flag on the day of the Queen’s funeral.
The march in Dublin on Monday afternoon was described as “against the hateful worship of the English monarchy by the ruling class of the Free State”. https://t.co/q8ygtKDZik
