Wildfire raging since Monday in the southwest France and burned more than 37,000 hectares in the Medoc wine region is now under control, local authorities said today.
“The fire is not developing. No other areas were burned. No further evacuation was required,” the sheriff’s office said in a morning message, adding that about 1,000 firefighters fought the fire all night.
The fire, which destroyed four houses and several buildings, forced the authorities to evacuate more than 1,800 people earlier in the week.
In the summer, France, like the rest of Europe, faced heat and drought that set off wildfires across the continent.
