The Russian-imposed administration of the Donetsk region claims that Ukrainian forces are responsible for the attack on the prison, announcing that one Ukrainian prisoner of war was killed and four were wounded.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which released the names of 50 dead and 73 wounded on Saturday, a prison in Olenivka was bombed at the end of July, killing or injuring most of the 193 Ukrainian prisoners of war held there.

Russia claimed that the strike was carried out from the launcher of the HIMARS multi-purpose missile system supplied to Ukraine by the United States, as Kyiv seeks to retake territory controlled by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine has denied that it would ever target a civilian position – especially one where its own people are – and accused Russia of orchestrating the attack in retaliation for Ukrainian nationalists among the prisoners from Mariupol a few weeks ago, Agerpres said.
