In the government’s plan to deal with the adverse effects of a very harsh winter due to the unprecedented energy crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the beginning of the meeting with President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Palace. “We have to be active at the national and European level. At the national level, we are implementing a plan to support electricity bills by removing the adjustment clause and recycling the excess profits of electricity producers. Next week, interventions will be announced to reduce the price of natural gas, there will be an intervention at a gas station for fuel oil, as well as an extended heating surcharge,” the prime minister said.
Mr. Mitsotakis insisted that all the measures that have been taken or will be taken are a safety net to enable households to weather the coming difficult winter, as he characteristically said. As he pointed out, the government’s plan is based on two directions: firstly, on supporting households and businesses, and secondly, on achieving what he described as an immutable goal of fiscal adjustment: “Everything we do is measured,” – he noted.
The Prime Minister elaborated on the axes of the plan for low cost housing for youth, young couples and students, speaking of the impressive youth response and emphasizing that this is a top priority for the government. At the European level, the Prime Minister insisted on accepting his proposal to impose a ceiling on international prices for natural gas, not just for Russian natural gas, and said he regrets that Brussels and EU member states have still not been able to reach an agreement.
“The crisis is taking a toll on households and businesses and affecting the weakest. I am glad that Europe is now aware of the problem and is looking for solutions,” said the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, adding: “The surplus profits earned by electricity producers should be distributed to the weakest.”
