The migrants, mostly Venezuelans, including children, arrived on Wednesday in Martha’s Vineyard, a Democratic stronghold and popular resort for the country’s political elite. They were put on flights from Texas that Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he had chartered.

Despite local efforts to help the new arrivals, the island is “not equipped to provide permanent housing, and state officials have developed a comprehensive humanitarian assistance plan,” according to a statement from Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker’s office.

On Friday, authorities suggested the migrants be “moved to a new temporary shelter” at Joint Base Cape Cod, where “families will not be separated,” the statement said, adding that the base was already serving as a temporary shelter and that they would have access to medical and legal services.

According to local media, the migrants left Martha’s Vineyard later that day.

Some of them said that when they left Texas, they did not know that they would be sent to the island.

Local Democrat Julian Cyr called for an investigation. “Whether it meets the legal definition of human trafficking or not, it meets the moral definition of human trafficking (…). I hope that the Ministry of Justice will consider this,” he told a local TV channel.

Sending migrants to Democratic strongholds has become a political weapon for right-wing leaders to decry the policies of President Joe Biden, who they accuse of turning the border with Mexico into a sieve, and try to put immigration at the center of the election campaign. mid-semester in November.

On Thursday, two busloads of migrants arrived at the residence of Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington. The placement was intentional because the Democratic leader is in charge of the explosive immigration issue in the White House. They were sent by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

On Friday, the White House again criticized the methods, condemning “intentional and cruel political staging.”
