Two people were infected with the mosquito-borne virus in late August, according to Braile medical authorities.

It is about a 71-year-old man from Gropeny and an 86-year-old woman from Braila, writes News.ro. Both patients were admitted late last month to the intensive care unit of the Braille District Emergency Hospital with a severe form of the disease.

Even then, doctors were cautious about the chances of survival, given that both patients fell into a coma.

In the case of mosquitoes, the risk in Romania is lower compared to tropical and subtropical regions, at least in theory, says Adrian Marinescu, an infectious disease doctor at the Mateus Bals Institute.

“However, the real risk is associated with West Nile virus infection. It is true that most mosquitoes do not tolerate it. But among those who transmit, there is a percentage of people who have a severe form of encephalitis. , namely meningoencephalitis,” explains doctor Adrian Marinescu for HotNews.ro.

Symptoms of West Nile virus infection. 80% of infected people are asymptomatic

Among people infected with West Nile virus, 80% are asymptomatic, says Adrian Marinescu. The remaining 20% ​​have one or another form of the disease. They say that according to statistics, every 150 patients with the virus develop encephalitis, which is a serious disease.
