“It is gratifying to see the success that Ukraine has been able to achieve in recent days, especially thanks to German weapons,” Christine Lambrecht told reporters.

Kyiv’s counteroffensive “shows how important it is to quickly provide Ukraine with additional military equipment,” she added.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz also spoke for his country’s support for Ukraine.

“We are helping them (…) because we support their struggle,” he said in his speech, listing the ways Berlin has helped Ukraine, from supplying weapons to training troops.

“Our arms deliveries, like those of our allies, contributed to the fact that everything did not go as planned by the Russian president,” he added.

Lambrecht announced the delivery of two new Mars-II multiple launch systems, as well as 200 missiles. Ukraine will also receive 50 Dingo all-terrain vehicles.

However, Germany at this stage does not intend to supply Leopard-2 main battle tanks, although Ukraine insisted on this.

Berlin continues to rely on a circular supply system: Greece will receive German Marder tanks, which Kyiv is also asking for, and Athens will “very soon” supply older tanks in exchange for Ukraine, Ms. Lambrecht said.

“It is important for me to state that these deliveries will not weaken the Bundeswehr (German army),” the minister said.

“We are still able to defend the alliance (NATO) and the country, and it is important to me that our allies on the eastern flank can count on us to keep our promises,” Lambrecht said.

In recent days, both Kyiv and Berlin have criticized the German government for its reluctance to supply tanks that could help change the situation amid the Ukrainian offensive.
