1919-1922 – Historical sheets with the letter “K”: the decision of the Allies at the Paris Conference.

As a result of February 1922, the question that preoccupied the Greek government and diplomacy was the conference in Paris of the Allied Foreign Ministers for the East: the time of its convening, as well as the solution they would prefer. Director Catimerini, who was in Rome (together with Prime Minister D. Gounaris), answered a question related to time, considering the next month (March) the most likely. As for the essence of the decision, this is reported in the editorial article.

“Yesterday’s telegram from the director of the Kathimerini in Rome finally informed the Greek public that the decision for the east had been made in principle. And he announced the general features of this decision: it will be proposed to change the border line of Tsataltsy, which has been preserved Greek in eastern Thrace, and to establish a regime of communal autonomy in Asia Minor under a Christian ruler. This will be the decision of the allies, regardless of whether Greece or Turkey accepts it, regardless of whether there are executors of the decision and whether those who will issue it as final will really want to implement it.

Given this decision, the opinion of the newspaper regarding the required Greek position was: “Regardless of the probabilities that favor one or another of the events, Greece as a state and Greece, more specifically or more generally interested, as a people, must begin to prepare for the position taken, one way or another, – position of acceptance or not – upon notice of the decision – the decision is enforceable or not.

The concern in the government was caused by two other materials published on the same day and echoing the processes developing on the basis of the accumulation of impasses at the military, political, diplomatic and economic levels. One concerned information about the movement – on the model of D’Annuccio – of the commander-in-chief An. Papoulas and a significant part of the Army against the evacuation of Minorasia. The other concerned the formation of a political movement of independent trustees who “came to a certain common understanding of the whole political situation” and took initiatives to that effect.1919-1922 - Historical pages from
