Energy Minister Virgil Popescu says he does not believe the price of diesel will exceed 9 lei per liter by October 1, the date when the voluntary 50 pence reduction scheme, a measure that came into force on July 1, ends . Popescu says that he has had discussions in the market and expects a downward correction in the price of diesel fuel.

Virgil Popescu: Perhaps there will be another downward correction in the price of diesel fuel

  • “Romania is an importer of diesel fuel. I also saw an increase today and yesterday, from 8.33 lei to 8.44 lei, an increase of 11 money. The diesel price 10 days ago, from what I managed to check this morning, went up a bit along with the lei-dollar ratio, not lei-euro, because the excise tax is paid in dollars.
  • And in general, when we talk about excise taxes, we should look at the dollar, not the euro. True, the euro also rose and returned, but I do not expect a very strong increase in the price of diesel.
  • We have already discussed on the market and we can expect a new downward correction of the price of diesel.” This was announced by Minister Virgil Popescu on Wednesday.

The minister also stated that “the price of oil is one thing and it is directly reflected in the price of petrol, which continues to decrease, but the price of diesel is affected by the international price of diesel, not oil, because we are also importers of diesel.”

Will the voluntary reduction of 50 money for fuel be continued from October 1?

Asked whether the government would extend the 50p petrol and diesel surcharge, which expires on September 30, 2022, the energy minister said it was not yet decided in the Coalition.

  • “As for what will happen from October 1, I think we should wait a little longer. We will probably hold discussions at the level of the ruling coalition, within the government, and we will announce a decision,” Minister Virgil Popescu also said.

HotNews.ro wrote on Tuesday that in recent days gas stations can voluntarily apply a 50-pence discount on fuel, and diesel prices continued to rise relative to gasoline, reaching an average of 30 kopecks below the level of July 1, when the compensation scheme came into force. The danger is that the price of diesel will return to the mark of more than 9 lei/liter.
