The City Hall has started work on the restoration of the return ring of tram 5, General Mayor Nikushor Dan announced on his Facebook page. The work is performed by STB, the completion period is 6 months.
“We have started work on the continuation and completion of the tram ring reconstruction project on Povitryany Boulevard. The works are carried out by the Bucharest Transport Company. It is about a project that has been suspended for more than ten years due to legal problems related to expropriations, as well as due to the insolvency of the former executor,” Nikushor Dan announced.
The works also include the construction of a platform on the return ring, so travelers using this route will be much closer to points of interest such as Baneas Airport.
“The tram line, catenary network and platforms will be modernized, drainage for traffic lights, roadway and sidewalks will be restored, and the public lighting system will be modernized using LED technologies. Thanks to the reactivation of the return cycle, a better development of the tram fleet serving line 5 will be achieved, the waiting time of the cars will be significantly reduced, ensuring their uninterrupted flow,” wrote Nikushor Dan on the Facebook page.
In June, after a 5-year hiatus, the city hall reactivated tram No. 5, but trams run on the section Ștefan cel Mare – Bd. Barbu Văcărescu – Pod Băneasa – Bd. Aerogării, to the intersection with Bd. Ficusului, two-way trams are used because the loop is not working.
Tram 5 did not run for 5 years, and the track was used as a parking lot for those who work in the area, because there were requests for the retrocession of the land at the end of the line, in Băneasa, and the legal situation could not be clarified. In 2012, the return track was removed for modernization, but it cannot be returned, as the municipality cannot invest until the legal situation is clarified. Now the legal situation with the loop has been resolved, the affected land plot has been alienated, and modernization work can begin.
