With Matevz Luzar’s black-and-white film The Orchestra, Slovenia will compete for an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 2023.

The feature comedy film tells about the cheerful members of the brass band who go to the festival, which takes place in a small Austrian town.

“Each orchestra is made up of people, each with its own problems and dreams. The Luzar film orchestra consists of people in whom we believe and who bring us universal human emotions: joy, sadness, fear, compassion, unfulfilled dreams and hope,” said the jury that chose the film.

The story tells of a brass band from the town of Zagorje ob Savi on its way to a town in Austria from five points of view: two bus drivers, troubled teenagers and wives who abandoned the band members at home, suspicious Austrian organizers of the Festival, and finally, the band as a whole .

Matevz Luzar, who was born in Zagorje ob Savi, also wrote the screenplay for the film.
