Emmys 2022: everything we know about TV’s biggest celebration

Winners Emmy, the biggest holiday for television, will be announced on Monday evening in Los Angeles (at 3 am on Tuesday in Greece). The institution awards TV shows and actors who excelled in the past year.

The host of the evening is once again Saturday Night Live veteran Kenan Thompson, who will do his best to keep audiences and home viewers interested and try to increase viewership. Last year, the ceremony was watched by 7.4 million viewers.

Emmy 2022: what to watch

The ceremony will follow approximately the same pattern as in previous years. For the first time since 2019 — before the pandemic — the Emmys will return to their traditional home at the Microsoft Theater (the 2020 ceremony was mostly online, while the 2021 ceremony took place in a tent.

However, some elements of the 2021 ceremony will remain. The event’s producers told The Hollywood Reporter that there will be tables similar to those that Golden Globe nominees and contestants sit at.

In terms of nominated shows, this will be the most competitive year in Emmy history. There were many entries in the Best Drama, Best Comedy and Miniseries categories.

And although there are many candidates and they are participating in series that are shown on different networks, the two that are expected to win with the most awards are HBO and Netflix.

Favorites “Legacy”, “The Squid Game” and “Gap”

The hit HBO series, which won Best Drama Series in 2020, has received the most nominations of any series this year. In addition, Legacy won the Creative Arts Emmys Award for Outstanding Cast in a Drama Series last week.

But other top-rated shows are now up for Emmys: Netflix’s South Korean series The Squid Game and Apple TV+’s thriller Severance.

If “Squid Game” wins, it will be the first foreign language program to win an award in such a large and important category. This will be a breakthrough as television becomes global and non-English language production increases. In addition, the American audience is increasingly receptive to series with subtitles.

If Apple’s dystopian thriller Severance wins in the Best Drama category, it will be a big win for the tech giant. Apple TV+, which debuted in November 2019, has already won a Primetime Emmy for Best Comedy (last year for Ted Lasso) and an Academy Award for Best Picture for KODA.

Acting Competition

Will Zendaya win another Primetime Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria, Laura Linney (Ozark) or Melanie Lynskey (The Yellow Vests)? Those who predict the winners do not have a clear favorite this year.

However, the biggest competition will be in the Best Actor in a Drama Series category. Jeremy Strong is on his way to a second Emmy win for his role in The Heir. In this category, he meets his co-star Brian Cox. But in addition to them, there are also Squid Game actors who are in the race for the statuette.

On the other hand, the Best Comedy category is also very competitive. Bill Hader has already won the award twice for his role in the HBO series Barry. This year he will face Jason Sudeikis, Steve Martin and Martin Short. If Martin wins (for his role on the hit TV series Only Murders in the Building), it will be his first Emmy since winning the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1969.
