A letter signed by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was sent in early September to 25 capitals of the EU countries, to the head of European foreign policy Z. Borrell, permanent members of the UN Security Council, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and UN Secretary General António Guterres.
According to the Turkish state news agency Anadolu, Ankara refers in its letter to Greece’s “illegal actions” as well as Greece’s “maximalist demands”.
In the letter under consideration, the Turkish side returns the issue of the demilitarization of the Greek islands in the eastern Aegean, but at the same time presents all the issues that it raises against Greece as “closely connected and interconnected.”
In addition, he brings back the issue of gray areas, arguing that there are “islands, islets and rocks in the Aegean…whose sovereignty has not been transferred to Greece through existing international agreements”, while at the same time raising the question of the boundaries of territories located under the jurisdiction of Greece (research and rescue, FIR, NAVTEX).
Trying to appear diplomatic, Turkish diplomacy claims in its letter, Anadolu reports, “that the problems in the Aegean can be resolved within the framework of international law, with mutual recognition of the fundamental rights and legitimate interests of the two countries.” .”
In the same context, Ankara declares that it “is in favor of dialogue and cooperation”, and on the other hand, accuses Greece of “avoiding dialogue and escalating tension”.
Turkish Ministry of National Defense sources claim, according to Anadolu, that in the first eight months of 2022 alone, Greece violated Turkish airspace and territorial waters more than 1,100 times.
