At the age of just 21, Iga Sviatek won her third career Grand Slam title after triumphing at the 2022 US Open. After defeating Ons Jaber in the final, the Polish athlete said she did not expect to win the tournament in New York.

Svyatek looked out of shape heading into Flushing Meadows (she pulled out early in Cincinnati and Toronto), but said she was proud to be able to raise her game and resist the temptations of a big American city.

Iga talked about the important names he met in New York (American soloist Seal, former skier Lindsay Vonn) and how he will spend the first day after the US Open triumph.

“I am very proud of myself because it was not an easy match, although I dominated at the beginning. I knew it would be difficult and that Ons (Jaber) would take advantage of my every mistake. I didn’t want to back down.

The second set was very exciting, I’m glad I was able to add a little more intensity and energy to finish the game. I am especially proud of the fact that I don’t lose morale in important moments. I have no regrets, even if I lose, I know I give 100%. I use my qualities well. I know I still have a lot to improve on the field.

I didn’t expect much, especially before this tournament. It was a real challenge – it’s New York, so loud and crazy, so many temptations in the city, so many people I met who inspire me. It’s really overwhelming for me and I’m really proud that I was able to mentally handle it.

I have met so many wonderful people like Lindsey Vonn. Seal too. After meeting him, I said to myself, “Even if I lose now, I’ve already won the tournament because I have his picture.”
