PNL President Nicolae Chuke said on Saturday that in Romania, women make up more than 50% of the country’s population, but their representation in parliament is less than 20%, adding that he is a supporter of gender quotas in politics.
“In Romania, women make up more than 50% of the country’s population, but their representation in the parliament is less than 20%. I am a supporter of gender quotas in politics, and have repeatedly made public my commitment to promoting more women in politics. local and parliamentary lists,” Chuke wrote on Facebook.
He added that meritocracy and gender quotas are not mutually exclusive, “and this decision is only a means of promoting respect and gender equality in Romanian politics.”
“I conveyed all these things today at the Liberal Women’s Summer School and assured them of my full support and support of the Liberal National Party to balance Romania’s political system, etc. We liberals must offer all Romanians, regardless of gender, region, social or economic status, every opportunity to develop as they want, as they deserve,” the leader of the liberals also noted.
Chuke also stated that steps are needed to address the issue of the low number of women in the leadership structures of politics.
“The number of girls and women in leadership structures both at the political and governmental levels is as low as possible (…) We need a dialogue and we need each of the political parties to understand this aspect, and in the Government it is as obvious as possible, that we have only one woman at the government table. We must recognize this problem, we must find a solution, and I believe that only through involvement, through dialogue, through persuasion, we can achieve this goal,” said Nicolae Chuke.
