About Thessaloniki Metro, Karamanlis: “The project will be commissioned at the end of 2023”-1

“Today we have the great pleasure of being in the depot at the new Attiko Metro offices and in the operations control center. As you can see, the test routes started normally. We are in the final phase of a project that, let me tell you, has become the shortest joke ever. A project that should have been completed many years ago but never materialized. This is a project that will really change the city, improve the daily life of citizens,” the minister said.

Noting that from the first day he took office at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, “we have set a very specific timetable,” Mr. Karamanlis noted that “rarely is a timetable set for such complex projects. This is what we are sticking to, and now even the most skeptics are finding that this work is being completed.”

During a tour of the Thessaloniki metro station, which covers an area of 1,200 square meters and will employ about 350 people, information was given on how the movement of 18 trains, which will run without a driver, will be controlled electronically.

It was noted that the routes would be scheduled every night, and in the morning the train would depart on its own.

Mr. Karamanlis also emphasized that Thessaloniki metro station is one of the most modern in Europe and will become an ornament not only for the city, but for the whole of Greece, reiterating that its completion proves that “in the city we can have both an ancient metro and a metro” .

The Minister was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Giorgos Karagiannis and upon arrival at the station was welcomed by Attiko Metro SA President Nikos Tahiaos and Managing Director Nikos Kouretas, Contractor General Manager Panagiotis Korakitis and Aktora President and Managing Director Christos Panagiotopoulos. The tour was also attended by representatives of a member of the consortium contractor Hitachi.
