Organizers of the London Grand Slam offered their condolences to the royal family and released a photo of the royal family presenting the trophy to Rod Laver, the 1962 Wimbledon champion.
“As a former patron of our club for 64 years, Her Majesty’s visits to Wimbledon in 1957, 1962, 1977 and 2010 were special moments in the club’s history and were marked by the enthusiasm and commitment of spectators, players and colleagues.
A particularly memorable visit was in 1977, when Her Majesty visited Wimbledon during her silver jubilee. That day, accompanied by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen presented the women’s singles trophy to Virginia Wade of Great Britain.
Her Majesty last visited Wimbledon in 2010, during which she met players past and present, including Andy Murray, Serena and Venus Williams, Roger Federer, Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King, as well as boys and girls, officials and players in junior tournament”, – the All England Club said in a statement.
