The total number of laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox since the start of reporting is 66 (all males, mean age: 37 years (19–61), of which 20 reported traveling abroad during the incubation period of the disease (30%), according to EODY.

The previous report only recorded 58 cases, which means that eight new cases have been identified in the last week.

It is noted that the reported laboratory-confirmed cases have already recovered or are recovering in generally good clinical condition. The data presented in the EODY report relates to laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox virus infection in Greece based on data reported by EODY and registered up to 8 September 2022.

Monkeypox is a viral infection first identified in 1958. Since then, it has been found in tropical areas of West and Central Africa. It is transmitted through contact with wild animals and from person to person through close physical contact.

In May 2022, an increase in monkeypox cases was reported in non-endemic countries. In total, in Europe until September 6, 2022, 23,196 cases of the disease were reported in 43 different countries.
