The governor of Russia’s Far East, who was personally appointed by President Vladimir Putin, says he would “gladly” go to fight in Ukraine, but is not allowed to because of his position.

This was stated by the governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Mykhailo Degtyarev in an interview with RIA Novosti, talking about the military from his region who went to fight in the “special military operation” launched by Putin on February 24.

“We are proud of them and thank them. Well done for going there. I would also like to go, but they don’t let me. I am fired because I am the governor,” says the Russian official.

Then he explains that he is the commander of the local territorial defense forces, for which every Russian governor is responsible. “I am not allowed to leave my post,” adds Degtyarev.

Degtyarev is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, which until April was headed by the famous Russian ultranationalist Volodymyr Zhirynovsky. The Russian press reported on his death on April 6.

Zhirynovsky’s successor, MP Leonid Slutskyi, said on Thursday that Transnistria is Russian territory and that the Moscow authorities should make more efforts to support pro-Russian separatists in the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

Vladimir Putin personally appointed Degtyarev as governor

The head of the Kremlin appointed Degtyarev by decree after the previous governor of Khabarovsk, Serhiy Frugal, was detained in the summer of July 2020 on suspicion of organizing the murder of several businessmen 15 years ago.

His detention at the time was seen as political and sparked widespread protests in Khabarovsk, an otherwise peaceful region of Russia. Local news site DVHab.ru said the protest, which involved 40,000 residents, was “the largest in Khabarovsk’s history”, adding that it blocked traffic in the capital of more than 600,000 residents.

In 2018, to everyone’s surprise, Frugal managed to defeat United Russia candidate Vladimir Putin for the post of governor, gaining almost 70% of the vote. His trial has not yet begun, although Frugal has been in custody for more than two years.

At 41, Degtyarev is one of Russia’s youngest governors, and he is also a member of the LDPR, which, despite its name, is an ultra-nationalist political formation.

Regional elections will be held in Russia on September 11.
