West Ham United vs FCSB, UEFA Conference League Group B first leg, on Thursday 8th September at 10pm live on Pro TV.
West Ham United, second favorites to win the current UEFA Conference League draw, have had a poor start to the Premier League, where they have just four points from the first six rounds (18th out of 20).
The London Stadium outfit have invested €182 million in transfers this summer with the aim of breaking into the top four, having finished in seventh place last season.
Coach David Moyes brought in, among others, Lucas Paquette (Lyon, €43 million, plus bonuses of another €19 million), Gianluca Scamakka (Sassuolo, €36 million), Nayef Agerd (Rennes, €35 million) and Emerson (Chelsea, 15 millions of euros).
Also in the group of “hammer fighters” are other top footballers, such as Lukasz Fabianski (ex-Arsenal), Pablo Fornals (ex-Villarreal), Thilo Kerer (ex-PSG), Kurt Zuma (ex-Chelsea) or Declan Rice (captain team, the new star of the England national team).
That means West Ham United’s lot, as quoted by specialist websites, is worth €432.5m, compared to just €43m estimated by FCSB.
West Ham United reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League last season, where they were knocked out by eventual trophy winners Eintracht Frankfurt (a German double, 2-1 away and 1-0 at home). .
FCSB return to the groups of the European tournament after five years and travel to London at one of their worst times in a decade, with just one win in the first seven rounds of the Superliga and an emotional qualification at this stage after knocking out tough mid-table teams like Saburtalo, Dunajska Streda and Viking Stavanger.
“We did everything possible in Europe, let’s qualify. Few believed it. But now we have to have extra speed. We will have a very tough opponent in Europe. Let’s see. To be honest, it gives me goosebumps,” FCSB coach Nicolae Dike said of the match against West Ham United.
FCSB (then “Steaua”) and “West Ham United” previously met in the 1/8 finals of the UEFA Cup in the 1998-1999 season: the “red and blues” won in Genc with a score of 2:0 (goals by Laurentiu Roche and Sabine Illier; coach Emerick Yenei ) and drew 0-0 at Upton Park (WHU featured stars such as Shaka Hyslop, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Trevor Sinclar, Paul Wanchope, Paolo Di Canio, Joe Cole and the late Marc-Vivien Fo; the coach was the famous Harry Redknapp).
Group B also includes RSC Anderlecht Bruxelles (Belgium) and Silkeborg IF (Denmark).
Superbet offers odds of 2.40 for West Ham United to win both halves of the match against FCSB.
