Turkish President Recep Erdogan said on Wednesday that Western countries are sending “scrap metal” to Ukraine as military equipment, the Turkish Anadolu Agency reports.

At a press conference held in Belgrade together with his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vučić, Erdogan accused Western countries of “provocations” by Russia.

“I can say frankly that I do not consider the current position of the West (…) correct. The West pursues a policy based on provocations,” answered the question about the energy crisis in Europe.

He made similar statements a day ago when he blamed Europe for the energy crisis, effectively echoing the Kremlin’s official rhetoric.

“As long as you try to wage such a provocative war, you will not be able to achieve the expected results,” he said on Wednesday, adding that “we, Turkey, have always supported a policy of balance between Russia and Ukraine. “

The Turkish president also said in Belgrade, where he arrived for the Turkish-Serbian business forum, that the West “declares military support” for Ukraine.

“But how much old weapons and scrap metal are actually sent to Ukraine from the West?”, the Turkish president asked rhetorically.

“Can we say that one side is winning now? No! There are no winners in this war, but many losers. A large number of people are dying,” said Recep Erdogan.

Aleksandar Vučić, for his part, noted that the coming months will be very difficult for the countries of the European Union.

“This winter will be very cold for all of us, and next winter will be polar for all of Europe. No one wants to look for a solution, everyone expects the defeat of the enemy, not a compromise. If you really think that you can easily defeat Russia militarily, then we can prepare well for both the cold and the polar winter,” he said.

European officials have sharply criticized Belgrade for its decision not to impose sanctions on Russia after the start of the war in Ukraine, as it is a candidate country and must gradually align its foreign policy with that of Brussels.
