Russia’s Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will not resume natural gas supplies to Europe until Siemens Energy repairs faulty equipment, Gazprom Deputy CEO Vitaly Markelov said on Tuesday, Reuters reports.
“You have to ask Siemens. They have to fix the equipment first,” he said on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in the Russian port of Vladivostok, when asked when he would be able to pump gas again.
Gazprom said on Friday that it had discovered an engine oil leak in the only turbine still operating at the Portova compressor station for the Nord Stream 1 system and would suspend supplies until it was fixed.
Germany’s Siemens Energy said earlier on Saturday that it had not been asked to carry out repairs and that the leak reported by Gazprom did not normally affect the operation of the turbine and could be sealed in place.
It also states that other turbines are available for use at the affected compressor station.
Last Tuesday, Russia completely halted the supply of Russian natural gas to Germany and other European countries supplied by the Nord Stream gas pipeline for several days of maintenance work, but Gazprom announced on Friday that supplies to Europe remain suspended indefinitely.
The price of natural gas on European markets jumped by 30% on Monday after Gazprom’s statement.
On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov reiterated Moscow’s position that problems with gas supplies to Russia are entirely the result of Western sanctions.
