Her resignation announcement came just hours after Liz Truss won an internal contest in the Conservative Party, according to Agerpres. Truss will take over as UK prime minister on Tuesday after being received by Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where the acting prime minister will also arrive to hand in the sovereign’s resignation.
“I congratulate Liz Truss on being elected as our new leader and offer my support to our new Prime Minister,” Patel wrote in his resignation letter to Acting Prime Minister Boris Johnson, which he posted on Twitter.
“I have decided to continue my public service to the country and Whitman’s constituency as a backbencher after Liz officially takes over as Prime Minister and a new Home Secretary is appointed,” Priti Patel said.
Johnson announced his resignation in July, after a long period of resistance to rivals from his own party and scandals that were temporarily overshadowed by the war that Russia launched against Ukraine on February 24. .
Earlier on Monday, the Kremlin said it expected relations with London to deteriorate further after Liz Truss became prime minister.
