Gas supplies in Germany are currently secured, but the situation is tense and a deterioration cannot be ruled out, the network regulator (electricity, gas, telecommunications) reported to Reuters after Russian group Gazprom cut off supplies through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.

“The malfunctions cited by the Russian side are not a technical reason for the shutdown,” the regulatory body’s daily report on the gas situation says, Neews.ro cites Reuters.

Deliveries through the Suzh entry point were up slightly from the 41.3 million cubic meters sent by Gazprom on Friday, but not enough to make up for the shortfall in gas expected to be pumped through Nord Stream 1 on Saturday.

On Friday evening, Gazprom said it had discovered an oil leak at a turbine and would not resume gas supplies to Germany via Nord Stream 1 until it was fixed. The Russian company motivated this by the fact that repairs can be carried out only in a special workshop.

Gas supplies through the Nord Strem 1 gas pipeline have been suspended since August 31 due to repair works.

Germany’s grid regulator said on Friday that the country is now better prepared to cut off Russian gas supplies, but urged citizens and businesses to reduce consumption.

European Economic Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni assured on Saturday that the European Union is “well prepared” in the event of a complete shutdown of Russian gas supplies due to reserves and measures to reduce energy consumption.
