Statements by a high-ranking religious official in the Greek Republic caused a scandal on Friday, as he said that a woman can only be raped if she wants it and that she cannot get pregnant after having sex without consent, AFP reported.
“A woman is not raped if she does not want it,” said Bishop Chrysostom of Dodonia during a televised debate on abortion, according to Agerpres.
After rape, a woman “cannot get pregnant” and her “participation” is needed to conceive a child, he added.
His statements were quickly condemned by Education and Religions Minister Niki Kerameus, who described them as “unbelievable”.
Such proposals “brutally shock society and do not correspond to the position of the church, which supports women who have become victims of abuse and rape,” she said.
The Church of Greece is extremely conservative
The Church in Greece, the guardian of the dominant Orthodox faith in the country, according to the Constitution, is exclusively male and extremely conservative, AFP notes.
She opposes homosexual relations and premarital sex and abortion.
Bishop Chrysostom also qualified abortion as a “crime”.
