
Today marks one year since the death of the famous composer and fighter for democracy, Miki Theodorakis.
Chania, his father’s birthplace and the place he loved, honored his memory today as the annual memorial service was held at the Galatas cemetery.
The ceremony was attended by his daughter Margherita and members of the Theodorakis family, Secretary General of Contemporary Culture Eleni Dundoulakis, MP Vassilis Digalakis, Mayor of Chania Panagiotis Simandirakis and Mayor of Platanias Yiannis Malandrakis, Deputy Governor Nikos Kalogeris, President Giorgos Agorastakis of the Association “Friends of Mikis Theotorakis” and representatives parties.
After the memorial prayer and the laying of flowers on the grave of Mikis Theodorakis, the youth choir of the municipality of Chania, under the direction of Nikos Perrakis, performed the works of the great composer, and the Mikis Theodorakis orchestra also performed songs.
After the ceremony, a visit was made to the ancestral home of the Theodorakis family in Galatas, where a museum is being created.
Series of events in Crete
Chania and Crete are honoring Mikis Theodorakis with a series of events that will end on September 4th and will include performances, concerts and documentaries about his life and work.
In the afternoon, an exhibition dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis will be opened at the Megalo Arsenale, and his compositions will be performed by the Philharmonic of the Municipality of Chania in Gyali Tsami Square.
At 20:30 at the theater “Mikis Theodorakis”, in the old port of the city, a central commemorative event is planned, during which Kostas Gouliamos, professor of politics, culture and communication, full member of the “European Academy of Arts and Sciences” and former rector of the European University of Cyprus. The evening will conclude with the 2nd Mikis Theodorakis Quartet “The Graveyard” (1946) from the New Cretan Quartet.
On Saturday, September 3, a concert by the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra entitled “Mikis and Crete: Symphonic Works and Songs” is organized at the East Moat Theatre.
On Sunday, September 4, at the theater “Mikis Theodorakis”, in the Venetian port of Chania, Kostas Kehrakos will artistically hold a concert “Mikis tells …”, and Ioanna Forti will perform. This is a musical performance for Mikis Theodorakis, full of pages of modern Greek history as he tells them.
As part of the events, experimental master classes for schoolchildren were organized.
The events are organized by the Municipality of Chania, the Cultural Society of the Municipality (KEPEDICH-KAM), the Vice-Region of Chania and the All Crete Association “Friends of Miki Theodorakis” in cooperation with the Cultural Society of Crete. .
