US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Thursday welcomed a UN report on alleged human rights violations in China’s Xinjiang region, calling for Beijing to be held accountable for “genocide”, reports AFP.

“This report reinforces and confirms our grave concern about the ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity committed by the Chinese authorities” against the Uyghur Muslim minority, Blinken said in a statement.

Despite pressure from Beijing, which strongly condemned the report, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released a long-awaited report on the situation in Xinjiang on Wednesday evening.

The UN report mentions the possibility of “crimes against humanity” in the region, but does not mention genocide.

“We will continue to hold the Chinese authorities accountable and demand that they release all those wrongfully detained (…) and allow independent investigators unrestricted access to Xinjiang, Tibet and all of China,” the US secretary of state said.
