The architect Giorgos Triantafillou, in his personal blog and in his regular article in the Ta Nea newspaper, largely compensates for the lack of competent thinkers in terms of the quantity and quality of public space. Most of those who would or could engage in critical discourse do not have an institutional or journalistic platform, only social media, and often discussion is limited to followers. But Giorgos Triantafillou fights battles, often alone, and has gradually built up a corpus of critical texts. One of his recent articles touched me especially because it touches on a serious topic, even if at first glance it is marginal or elitist. It refers to the tendency or unconscious fashion to remove plaster, plaster from old urban architecture houses to expose the stonework. George Triantafillou opens the matter and brings it up for public debate with his knowledge of material, stone, masonry qualities and keystones which, when supposed to be revealed (i.e. part of the façade), were works of art and engineering. . The removal of stucco to create a pseudo-traditional atmosphere in homes (or even restaurant or shop interiors) that were not built with the stones visible reveals gaps in understanding of architecture and the quality of materials. Designed to remain inconspicuous, stonework was often crude in design, lacking the art of geometry that extroverted stonework had. As for the initiative of Giorgos Triantafyllos, there is a big “misunderstanding” about stone and plaster, which, according to him, significantly devalues the cultural reserve. I see, unfortunately, some, fortunately few, neoclassical houses in Athens, which were built by skillful craftsmen with skillful drawing, that is, houses of urban architecture, torn off and exposing rough stonework that never had a place in public opinion. Let’s first look at what tradition means.
