Intervention of the prosecutor on duty in the surgical clinic of the Volosskaya hospital

The intervention of the prosecutor of Volos was caused by a letter from the director of the Surgical Clinic of the Volos hospital, Mr. Dima. The ransom that the five-day vigils in September would remain uncovered.

As part of the investigation, F. Seretis, commander of the 5th Medical District, and Giannis Dokos, head of the hospital, will be asked to testify before an appointed judge about their actions to ensure that the clinic is not left without doctors and, of course, if there has been a violation of the law or criminal actions.

It is noted that in a letter to the hospital administration, the Medical Association of Magnesia and the prosecutor’s office, the director of the Surgical Clinic, Mr. Dim. Litras states: “Over the past 15 months or more, in order to keep our hospital running smoothly and above all safely (daily clinic operations, elective and urgent surgeries, daily regular outpatient needs of other departments), we have been required to perform 11 to 13 on-call , active and duty shifts per month. Hospital stay up to 35 consecutive hours and work 70 to 80 hours a week.”

An extension of the situation, according to the Director of Surgery, is not possible, as he notes that “patients’ lives are at risk due to possible medical error due to prolonged overreach of staff. The obvious cause of the problem is the extremely low number of qualified surgeons (1 resident, 3 supervisors, 1 assistant) of the clinic compared to the actual needs (5 surgeons for 60 or 62 shifts per month), but also unadvertised positions to cover the organic gaps of 50 %”.

For this reason, Mr. Litras informs the hospital administration, the Medical Association, and the prosecutor’s office that the Vitar program for the month of September will be successfully partially covered. “In particular, one surgeon on active duty and one on duty will be protected as a priority on all public holidays and weekends, so there can be no question of security on days when the hospital operates only with staff on duty. However, they will remain working days without calling a surgeon. On certain days and after the end of the morning hours, emergencies entering the emergency departments must be transferred to the surgical clinics of other nearby hospitals that will be on duty that day.
