Rafael Nadal defeated Australia’s Rinky Hijikata (198 ATP) in the first round of the US Open 2022. The match lasted more than three hours and the Iberian lost the first set.

Nadal won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 in three hours and 12 minutes of play.
In the second round, Nadal will face Italy’s Fabio Fognini, who edged past Aslan Karatsev 1-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 after three hours and 34 minutes of play.
Fabio Fognini beat Nadal at the 2015 US Open after the Iberian led 2-0 in sets. However, the winner of 22 career Grand Slams is 13-4 in head-to-head matches against Fognini.
The win over Hijikata was only the Iberian’s second post-retirement match ahead of the semi-finals at Wimbledon 2022. Nadal also played after the English Grand Slam in Cincinnati, where he was knocked out by Borna Coric in the opening round.
