
US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he is “determined to ban assault rifles” in the United States, in a fiery speech during a visit to Wilkes-Barre, in eastern Pennsylvania, AFP reported.
The 79-year-old Democrat, who is campaigning hard ahead of November’s congressional elections in the key state, said: “What good reason is there to have military weapons outside of a combat zone?”
The United States is experiencing a spiral of gun violence, most notably the massacre at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, which left 21 people dead, including 19 children.
More than 20,000 people have died from firearms in the U.S. since the beginning of the year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which includes suicides.
