Photojournalist sues Netflix over her portrayal in ‘Inventing Anna’

Former magazine photojournalist Vanity Fair sue Netflix for her portrayal in the hit platform series “Inventing Anna“.

OUR Rachel DeLoach Williams – one of the defendants in the real story of Anna Sorokina (or Delvi), a German of Russian origin, who managed to deceive the New York elite by pretending to be a rich heiress.

A libel suit filed by Williams states that the show portrays her as a “greedy, snobbish, unfaithful, manipulative and dishonest” person. Netflix has not commented on Williams’ transition.

The photojournalist began dating Sorokina in 2016 but then laid out a $62,000 bill for a six-day trip they took together in Morocco.

In 2019, Williams tearfully told the court that she was under the impression that Anna would cover all of their expenses and said she was under a lot of stress and anxiety about this unexpected debt.

When Anna’s Invention was released on the popular streaming platform in February, the BBC said in a statement: “The portrayal of Rachel on the show is incorrect. She comes across as self-centered and over the top.”

The real Williams told her own version of the story in a book she wrote called My Friend Anna, and that she was in no way affiliated with Netflix.

The lawsuit, filed on Monday, said: “As a result of falsely portraying her as a dishonest person, Williams has been the victim of online insults and derogatory characterizations through podcasts, etc.”

In addition, she stated that she had received “thousands of offensive messages” and that this damage to Williams’ reputation could have been avoided (…) Netflix gave fictitious names to many of the main characters in Sorokin’s story, but did not protect Williams in the same way. Instead, she used her real name and personal details. And he found an actress for her role, which they are a lot like.”
