“Europe is our future and our future is in our hands,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today from Prague, where he is visiting. He himself advocated the further expansion of the European Union to include countries Western Balkans and them Ukraine, Moldova as well as Agriculture. At the same time, he reinstated the demand for a gradual transition to majority decision-making, while proposing the coordination of EU member states’ defense capabilities and common air defence.
The German Chancellor, in his speech at the Charles University, repeatedly stressed Germany’s commitment to strengthening the sovereignty and autonomy of Europe. He was bluntly in favor of enlargement of the Union, but warned that in an enlarged Europe “differences among Member States in terms of political and economic interests and social systems will grow and where unanimity is required today, with each Member State will also increase the risk of that one country will use its veto power to prevent others from moving forward. “For this reason, I suggested a gradual transition to most decision-making in general foreign policy, as well as in other areas such as taxation, knowing full well that this would also have consequences for Germany.added Mr Solts.
The German leader condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine as “an attack on the European security order” and he called for more military cooperation between member states, as he said there are many and often incompatible weapons systems in Europe today, leading to limited effectiveness and increased maintenance costs.
