Former People’s Deputy from Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s party Oleksiy Kovalev, who cooperated with the Russians after the occupation of Kherson by the Russian military, was killed by a shot in the head at home together with his girlfriend on Sunday night, according to the Russian investigation, Kyiv Post reports.
He was appointed by the Russians as the deputy chief of Kherson. His body was found in his house in Golya Prystan. Nearby was a rifle officially registered in the name of Kovalev. His wife was hospitalized with a stab wound to the neck.
Ukrainian journalist Andrii Tsaplienko reported that a People’s Deputy from “Servant of the People” was killed in his own home. According to him, Kovalev was stabbed in the neck.
“There are a lot of occupation police near his house. A wealthy Kherson farmer Oleksiy Kovalev came to the parliament with the Servant of the People party and unexpectedly offered his services to the Russian occupiers at the beginning of the invasion. He arranged the supply of his products to Russia through Crimea,” Tsaplienko said.
In April, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) opened a criminal case against him, and in July Kovalev was charged with treason.
Later, the court seized the property of the collaborator, and the office of the deputy television was searched. Law enforcement officers also investigated Kovalev’s involvement in the illegal export of Ukrainian grain and salt to the Russian Federation.
In early April 2022, Kovalev wrote that he was in Golya Prystan, Kherson region, despite the Russian occupation, to “work in his area.”
In June, Kovalev boasted that he survived the assassination attempt
On May 3, Kovalev was expelled from the Servant of the People party. When Kovalev admitted on June 8 that he was cooperating with the Russian occupiers of the Kherson region, the Servant of the People faction appealed to the parliament to remove him from his powers.
On June 22, the head of Ukraine’s special services Kyrylo Budanov confirmed that Kovalev’s car was blown up in the Kherson region. On June 30, in an interview with Russian propagandists, Kovalev said that he survived the assassination attempt.
In June, Kovalev met with Serhiy Kiriyenko, the Kremlin official responsible for the Russian occupation, and said that “Russia is here for real and forever.”
A few weeks later, state media published this video in which he claimed that “Ukrainian special services” were trying to kill him. “Lucky guy!” he said. pic.twitter.com/Asseclx782

It will be recalled that the Ukrainian troops launched a counterattack to return the Kherson region occupied by the Russians. “The ground counteroffensive has begun. The Ukrainian army broke through the first line of Russian defense in Kherson,” Kyiv Post journalists reported, Ukrainian Pravda reports.
