Merchant sailors will be allowed to leave Ukraine if they receive permission from the local military administration, the Ukrainian prime minister announced on Saturday, a decision that could simplify the process of shipping grain from the country’s ports, Reuters writes.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal said that the government approved this measure on Saturday. This applies to male crew members of sea and river vessels, as well as students of the naval forces who have to undergo practical training on board the vessels, he clarified.
The decision is designed to reduce the shortage of sailors who are able and willing to man the crews of ships that come and go from Ukraine to export grain through the maritime corridor created by international mediation.
Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 are mostly barred from leaving Ukraine due to martial law imposed as the country battles a Russian invasion. Instead, women of any age could leave freely throughout the war.
