Russia’s capabilities in the North are a challenge for NATO, an organization that needs a strong presence of allies in the Arctic region, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday during a visit to Canada.
“The importance of the North is growing for NATO and Canada as we see a significant build-up of the Russian military with new bases and new weapons systems,” said Jens Stoltenberg, standing next to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Cold Lake, Alberta. reports Agerpres.
For his part, Trudeau said that the change in the geopolitical situation in recent months has shown that Russia is a growing concern. In this context, he promised that his country will inform NATO about the activities that Canada is conducting within the framework of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
NORAD is an organization established by the United States in cooperation with Canada that represents the aerospace control and aerospace warning system for North America.
At a news conference in Cold Lake, Alta., alongside NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, Prime Minister Trudeau faced questions about NATO’s possible role in Canada’s Arctic defense.
