
Sorana Kirstea passed the 1/8 finals of the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland on Monday. In the match with Marcela Zakarias (a lucky loser), our athlete lost only five games.
Sorana, who was originally scheduled to play Belgium’s Elise Mertens (the fourth favorite withdrew before the match), defeated the Mexican, who is ranked 212 in the world, 6-2, 6-3.
The match lasted an hour and 20 minutes.
For a place in the quarters, Kirstya (38 WTA) will fight with Magda Lynette (67 WTA), after the Pole beat Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva (39 WTA), score 6-4, 6-2.
Also, Romania is represented in the 1/8 finals of the American competition by Iryna Begu (match with the winner of the match Sofia Kenin – Dalayna Hewitt).
The tournament in Cleveland is part of the WTA 250 category, takes place from August 21 to 27 on hard, has a total prize money of $251,750, and the main favorites are Barbora Krejcikova (1 – wild card), Martina Trevisan (2), Kateryna Aleksandrova ( 3 ), Elise Mertens (4) and Iryna Begu (5).
