David Popovich is already one of the biggest names in the world of swimming, but the 17-year-old remains down-to-earth. Back in the country, the two-time European champion from Rome revealed how he celebrated the night he broke the 100m freestyle world record and how he manages to control all the attention he receives.
David Popovici celebrates with pizza, water and juice after breaking world record in 100m freestyle
“On the night of the world record, I ordered pizza from the hotel, set up a massage table in the lobby and spread… these pizzas on the table. I drank water, juice and… everything!
There were very few people: me, my team, and my parents. And that’s all… that’s how we celebrated” – Davyd Popovychin an interview for TVR.
David Popovich does not allow himself to be overwhelmed by success: “Too much attention spoils”
At 17 years old, David shows unusual maturity and explained that he does not read the news about himself in order to focus on his goals.
“I don’t know if they will call me arrogant, but what moved me the most was my world record and what I felt immediately after I achieved this result… when I came out of the water, when I was applauded by absolutely all the stands, the whole world was in delusional
I think I’ll be able to not be overwhelmed by the success, taking it one step at a time – all these new things that are happening to me, all the awards and generally everything new that’s happening in my life because of this show – and it’s good to stay away from all the attention, which I get, as much as possible because… too much can be a bad thing!
During the competition, I didn’t sit on the Internet at all, I didn’t read anything either about myself or about what others wanted from me in the final and so on. I stayed away. Just now, after I finished this contest, I looked a little more on the Internet, but a little, and I can’t say that there are any titles left that I liked, because I wasn’t paying attention” – Davyd Popovych.
